Aims & Goals

Previous business associations in Spryfield focused on supporting local businesses, correcting misconceptions about the community, addressing business concerns, and promoting growth in the area.

These goals continue today through the Spryfield Business Commission, originally formed in 2003 and rebranded in 2016.

By building strong relationships with municipal and provincial governments, the Commission has helped create greater support for positive community change and long-term improvement in Spryfield.

Aims & Goals

The Commission’s foundational work established Spryfield’s position as a key economic hub. Past  successes include securing the “District Centre” designation within HRM, collaborating on the Herring Cove Streetscape Study, and launching the community’s first comprehensive Business Directory and Anti-Graffiti programs. Current Initiatives & Community Engagement Building on that foundation, the Spryfield Business Commission now maintains a vibrant, year-round presence through environmental stewardship and consistent digital outreach:

● Beautification & Stewardship: We lead annual greening initiatives, including the maintenance of the Dunbrack Garden during the Beautification program.

● Active Digital Presence: We keep the community informed and connected through weekly updates with Bruce and dedicated new member interviews, ensuring our social media remains a dynamic hub for local news.

● The Spryfield Magazine: Our signature bi-annual publication has evolved into a fully digital format. This shift allows us to reach a broader demographic and stay ahead of digital trends while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

● Signature Events: We continue to host the community’s most beloved annual traditions, including Spryfield Days, the Car Show, and the Santa Claus Parade, culminating in our Annual Business Awards.

As the Commission grows, we continue to refine our strategies and find new ways to offer value to both our businesses and the residents who call Spryfield home.

Planting Seeds

The “Seeds of Success” in Spryfield were planted by some of the community’s earliest settlers, and that spirit continues today.

The roots of the Spryfield Business Commission began with an informal business association formed in the early 1990s by local business leaders. In 2003, it became a formal Business Improvement District through a service agreement with the Halifax Regional Municipality. In 2017, the organization officially adopted the name Spryfield Business Commission.

Today, with more than 150 members, the SBC supports business growth and prosperity while helping create a vibrant district with a strong mix of retail, services, hospitality, and community development that appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds.

As Spryfield continues to grow commercially, residentially, and as a community, its positive momentum and “Seeds of Success” continue to flourish.
